INTRO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1

The first project of the semester introduces students to precedent study and generative model. We were given options of well known residential homes in California to pick from. I chose to study the 6th Street House by Thom Mayne. The original design for this home was never constructed and instead was redesigned, taking aspect of the original design in the final construction of the house. In the second part of the project, we were instructed to generate massings to create a structure for the triplex model. I focused on the original plans to generate the triplex design, the most promented feature in the original plans was the reoccuring square shape. The requirements for the triplex model were to have 3 separate residences in one building and to have a designated common space (of the designer’s choice). I chose to make the dining space the common area for the tenants and the kitchens, rooms and bathrooms separate.

Following the first project, students decided on a location for the site in Joshua Tree. The site was placed on a 9 square grid and each student was assigned one of those squares to generate a physical model. After the model was complete we were assigned a specific build type to place their triplex on. We were also allowed to pick which square or squares they could place their model on (it did not have to be placed on their own topography). I was assigned a fill project and chose to place the triplex on square 1 of the overall topography.

The final project of the semester was to design a building for the newly established artist residency program by Noah Purifoy Foundation and Pomona College of the Claremont Colleges. This infill project is placed on Alley 43 in Claremont California on a 45’x150’ lot in the block. Before the designing, teams of 2 to conduct a precedent study, we conducted research on Campus Joachimstrasse by David Chipperfield. We researched materials, construction, and use of the projects as well as generated their own diagrams. The class carried out a site analysis, this included research of Noah Purifoy, Pomona College of Claremont Colleges, and the city of Claremont. The site analysis included site drawings and images. Set areas were given in the project program that gave students room types, size, and quantities of the spaces.
The roughly 16,000 sqft building is spread over 3 levels. The first level is for the public while the second and third levels are more private for the artists and administration. The gallery, reception, and coffee kiosk are located on level one and encompass the courtyard to activate the outdoor space. The exterior of the building is designed with respect to the buildings in the block in terms of height and material. This is because the City of Claremont is a historically recognized city, so the façade was not meant to be too intrusive. Once users enter the courtyard, forms used by Noah Purifoy present themselves, protrusions in the buildings that resemble his assemblage art.
